It has been more than 20 years since James Yeung joined the ranks of jewelry. Presently, he is a founder member and the director of Mariita Jewelry Ltd. When asking him about the door to success, he would like to share his management experience with us.
Mr. Yeung began his career in jewelry after high school. He was referred by his relative to work for a jewelry retail outlet in Central as trainee. Through the 7 years’ of professional training, he decided to run his own business for jewelry retail.
Mr. Yeung said, “Doing business should not limit to retail as it very much depends on seasonal sales. Thus, competition for designs and pricing are also intense.” It was under this situation that his business has been transformed into wholesale.
In 2005, he set up Mariita Jewelry Ltd, which specializes in diamond jewelry crafted with colored stones. From the showcase decoration to the overall design of the interior of the shop, people are impressed with it. Particularly, the company makes use of creativity presenting its new designs in animal and floral patterns, which are well-received by buyers. As a wholesaler, its products are targeted at medium market and are exported to the USA, Europe and the Middle East.
Mr. Yeung expressed that apart from white diamond jewelry, colored stone jewelry has been recently gaining popularity. So, there is still room for it. Customers may find it fresh and new. As such, following this direction with the use of laser soldering, Mr. Yeung adds new element to colored stone jewelry.
So, what is his source of inspiration? During his leisure time, Mr. Yeung surfs different jewelry nets, reading various jewelry magazines, visiting historical heritage, museums, and sculptures, etc.
When talking about the operating management, Mr. Yeung said frankly, “We only run a small business. We have to make use of the existing resources in terms of sourcing, manufacturing, cost control and materials used. Although we make just a small profit, we have a high turnover rate. In addition, credibility is the utmost important for the industry. We should treat our customers sincerely and offer reasonable prices. At the same time, ability and willingness to understand customers’ needs and to fulfilling them is also significant.”
Looking ahead, Mr. Yeung reiterated, “We are full of confidence in the Hong Kong jewelry industry. As a brand new company, we need to lay the good foundation for wholesaling. Proactively participating in different overseas jewelry shows, exploring various markets, understanding customers’ needs, diversifying products, launching new designs and to meeting the needs of different markets are the future development of our company. We believe that more customers are attracted, thus building up and maintaining a long-term business relationship.”
