Under keen competition, superseding other jewelry manufacturers is nothing easy. With its spectacular design, QIANN DESIGNS LTD. believes this is the strength to prevail over other industry players. Perhaps it is all a means to an end for small-scale enterprises alike.
QIANN DESIGNS LTD. was established by sisters Jeannie Lam and Carrie Lam in 2007. The sisters have been working in jewelry industry for 7 years, mainly gold jewelry exporting to the US. Well experienced in jewelry industry, they understand the overhead expenses are huge, in addition to the keen competition from plants in Mainland China, there is little room for development among Hong Kong jewelry manufacturers. Facing the saturating jewelry market, the sisters started their own businesses.
QIANN pays great attention on its jewelry design. To suit the design needs of various buyers, the company employs a Canadian designer and a local designer to target for respective markets.
Brand building is the current goal of QIANN. The company hired a marketing company to work out a series of advertising and promotions to bring QIANN into high-end department stores.
Quality control is essential in maintaining the brand image which is the core of jewelry design. To reduce cost, QIANN acquired a gold plant in Panyu, Guangdong to produce silver products because the high demand of the original gold production facilitates the labor and technology migration from gold to silver plant.
Looking into the products of QIANN, 80% are 925 silver, 20% are metal alloy, whereas lace, cloth, stainless steel and wooden beads come up with a minimal. Earrings and pendants sell best, price is the key criterion for buying. Greater attention is put at the texture in jewelry design, this is an adaptation of the US custom in Lam’s past experiences in gold. They tend to bring the distinctive features of gold jewelry to silver, surpassing the simple design of ordinary silver jewelry. The design focuses on elegance, with an abundant use of separable parts to make up a complicated structure, keeping pace with the accessory and fashion trend. In 2009, QIANN will launch theme products such as separable accessories at Valentines. Big bold semi-precious stones will be the favorite pick for materials.
Carrie said, “when we first established our company, we thought that the cost of silver jewelry was comparatively low and made over 100 samples monthly in the first half year, resulting in problems such as cash flow shortage and sample overstock. Now, we are more cautious about making sample, we have compiled a timetable of sample making to control the cost.” Corporate downsizing is another way of cost-control. Local businesses are done by the sisters Jeannie and Carrie. The scale of the Panyu plant has been cut in half since mid-2008. Under financial tsunami, no matter overseas or local market, price has been lowered to increase competitiveness. QIANN will strengthen local market first and then Mainland China market.
Carrie’s motto: Upgrading oneself, taking others’ opinion and paying attention to the current trend are the survival principles in this ever-changing era.
